Portfolio Update! May 29th, 2016

It has been a few months since my last Portfolio Update at the end of January. Since then I have made additional purchases to Pembina Pipeline Corp., and Toronto Dominion bank, adding 25 and 14 shares respectively. I have also done some trading, with selling and buying some of my Veresen shares.

The Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) has also been doing quite a bit better overall since its horrible start to 2016 and is now positive for the year so far. Which has reflected quite nicely on the total value of my portfolio. For the first time I am now consistently sitting above $35,000!

Total Portfolio Value
Annual Dividends

$35,616.43
$1,814.28

At my last update, which was a very long time ago in January my portfolio was sitting at a market value of $28,505.73, with annual estimated dividends of $1,751.23.

As of May 29th, 2016 my portfolio currently has a market value of $35,616.43, with annual estimated dividends of $1,814.28. An increase in market value of 20.5% and annual estimated dividends have increased by 3.5%.

I think the striking difference in appreciation of market value against annual dividends in fairly telling. While some of the increased value is from new contributions, a good portion of that value is from stock price appreciation, which does not necessarily result in added dividends. For instance Dream REIT actually significantly cut its dividend, which resulted in a large upswing in share price as investors felt that the remainder of the companies dividend became more sustainable. My dividend income dropped annually by about $120, yet the shares appreciated in value by around $300!

Overall I am very happy with the progress I have been making, and happy to see that the market has kept chugging along. I was very excited to see my portfolio consistently surpass $30,000, and now keeping itself above the $35,0000 mark as well!

Thank you for stopping by, sorry it took so long to update this and please feel free to comment!

  1. Wow, your yield on $35,000 is impressive. Around 5% for the entire portfolio. Nice work.

    1. Thanks! Yeah, with the banks, BCE and AQN being the core of my portfolio with 4%'ish yield, the REITs and a little risk really brings the overall yield up. Eventually as I hold the stocks longer, dividend raises will increase my yield on cost over time as well. :)
